Coming Out Of the Fashion Closet

The approach I’ve taken to fashion has never come from the perspective of just putting outfits together. As a child, I had the opportunity to observe two women— my mother and grandmother— get lost in sewing books, patterns, magazines and textile shops to create the perfect garment. Most often than not, those dresses ended up in photography albums that narrate the trajectory of our family’s history. So, whenever I sat next to them, admiring the hard work they put behind every stitch, it became clear that fashion was not materialistic, but rather cultural, emotional and artistic. I’m tired of being reduced by my love of fashion just because it’s not recognized as an art or important enough to attract someone’s interest as a scholarly discipline. Since the minute I started vocalizing my interest in working inside the industry the comments have been far from positive. I have found that, as a journalism student, I’m referred to as an entertainment journalist, and therefore, cooped up inside a box with the Giuliana Rancic wannabes of the world. …

Think: Is Fashion Worth Fainting For? Yeezy Thinks So

Fashion Week kicked off today with Kanye West’s Yeezy fashion show at Roosevelt Island in New York City. The infamous rapper turned designer turned Kardashian turned Taylor Swift’s nemesis decided to showcase his new collection with models standing under the blistering sun for over an hour. It was just a matter of time until one of them collapsed and one did. Not that fashion hasn’t seen its fair share of ridiculousness, but West has taken it to the core of labor rights. The working condition of models is one of the most controversial issues the fashion industry has had to battle for years. Canadian model Coco Rocha has been an advocate for The Model Alliance, a non-profit that pleads for the fair treatment of models, especially with measures regarding weight, age and schedules. Yet, Yeezy forces models to stand in the sun with no protection and no water for hours just to serve as props for his performance. No apologies followed. The industry was outraged:  Sad to say but we have a bunch of idiots …

What the Last Week At Work Is Like

Occupation: Part-Time Content Developer Time at the job: 11 months Monday The feels are real because I’m on my period. As usual, I have breakfast at work: cream and coffee. My successor is already at my desk by the time I get there, which makes me proud to have chosen someone punctual and responsible (adulting accomplished!). By 10 am, I am in full training session with him. My boss is back from a week-long vacation, so the pressure is on to hand in last week’s projects. Facebook’s Power Editor is being a pain, and my work wife left early, so Monday already sucks. I have pasta with chicken for lunch at the cafeteria, and take some time to get to know my replacement. Again, I chose well. Training session is back on. A last-minute client fucks up my afternoon mood, but I try to keep calm: the client comes first. By 5:30, we decide to clock out. Conclusion: The boss will always bully you on your last week with jokes about you leaving. Suck it …

A Letter to the Work Wife

(Image: Glamour) It’s 9 am. I just got here earlier than you do, as usual. But, as I walked to your desk in hopes to find a quarter I could rob for my morning coffee, I remembered you weren’t coming back again. It’s a sad realization, but one I never thought could hurt as much as N’SYNC breaking up. It’s 9 am at your new workplace as well. You are probably getting in just now. Your new boss awaits with post-its on the wall and many exciting, new briefs to share with you. Overwhelmed, you sit at your desk wondering what the next few months will bring. Will it be greatness or will you find yourself wanting to punch everyone again? As you once told me, “We all go through the same shit”. Indeed, a breakup has occurred. Just like I’ve had to endure in past relationships, the last few days I’ve watched as you take your mugs and dry shampoo from your desk and have had to reassign all your due tasks to me. …
